Tracking home improvement projects
Plan, budget, and track larger home improvement projects.
Home improvement projects are larger pieces of work than routine maintenance: a kitchen remodel, a new roof, finishing the basement. Projects share DwellHQ's reminder system but add budget tracking, status, and contractor assignment.
Projects are a paid-plan feature for write operations. Reads stay available if you ever downgrade — your project history is never hidden.
Creating a project
- Open your home and go to the Projects tab.
- Click New project.
- Fill in the basics: name, category (e.g. kitchen, exterior), estimated cost, target start and end dates.
- Assign a contractor if you have one — see Adding rooms and items for how DwellHQ stores contractor records.
Project status
Every project has a status: Planned, In progress, On hold, Completed, or Canceled. Status drives which projects appear in your active dashboard and how cost is reported.
Budget tracking
- Estimated cost — what you expect to spend.
- Actual cost — what you actually spent. Update this as invoices come in.
- DwellHQ rolls up totals across all projects so you can see how much you have invested in the home.
Reordering and prioritizing
Active projects can be dragged into the order that matters to you. On web, the active dashboard groups by priority; on mobile, it groups by status so you can see what is moving and what is stuck.
What to do next
- Share project tracking with your partner or contractor — see Inviting collaborators and transferring a home.
